How SpendWise works today — no fine print hiding somewhere else.
Getting started
What is SpendWise?
SpendWise is an envelope budgeting and bill-splitting app. You plan how the money you have will be used, record what you spend, and split costs with friends, roommates or family.
Is it free?
Yes, to start. Everything on the other pages of this site is part of the free plan, and you can use it for as long as you like. If you want more, Premium is $5.99 a month billed yearly ($71.88 CAD) or $8.99 month to month, plus tax. See pricing.
The free plan includes one budget, up to three accounts, one savings or planned-expense goal and one debt goal, and one split group with up to five members and five new split expenses per month.
Do I need to connect my bank?
No — and you can't. SpendWise doesn't connect to banks. You enter income and expenses yourself, which takes a few seconds each and keeps you aware of where money goes.
What do I need to sign up?
Your name, an email address and a password. You'll confirm your email, then a short setup asks about your income, your spending categories and how much is in your main account today.
Which devices can I use?
SpendWise runs in your web browser on phones, tablets and computers. Log in on any of them and you'll see the same budget. The web app is currently in beta.
What are the Split and Groups tabs in the app?
Split is bill splitting: a group of people, shared costs and who owes whom. It's on the free plan and described on the Split expenses page.
Groups is for shared budgets, where several people plan one budget together. It's part of SpendWise Premium (see pricing). You'll also see the Groups tab if someone invites you to their shared budget.
What isn't available yet?
- Shared budgets and the other SpendWise Premium features. Premium can't be bought during the beta.
- Recurring transactions. You record each transaction yourself.
- Installable phone apps. For now, SpendWise runs in the browser on your phone, tablet or computer.
Bank connections aren't part of SpendWise: you record transactions yourself.
Which currencies are supported?
30 currencies: AED, AUD, BRL, CAD, CHF, CNY, COP, DKK, EUR, GBP, HKD, IDR, INR, JPY, KRW, MXN, MYR, NOK, NZD, PHP, PLN, RUB, SAR, SEK, SGD, THB, TRY, TWD, USD and ZAR. Japanese yen and South Korean won use whole amounts; the others use two decimal places.
Your budget has one currency, chosen during setup. Changing it later doesn't convert existing amounts, and it's locked once you have accounts. Each split group also has one currency. SpendWise never converts between currencies or adds amounts in different currencies together.
Budgeting
What does “Ready to Assign” mean?
It's money you have that hasn't been given a job yet. Assign it to categories until Ready to Assign is $0.00. Income only shows up here once you record it — money you're expecting later doesn't count yet.
What happens if I overspend a category?
The category is marked Overspent and shows up under Needs Attention. You can cover it by moving money from another category. If you leave it, the overspending comes out of next month's Ready to Assign.
Can I change my plan in the middle of the month?
Yes. Move money between categories whenever you like, or assign new income as it arrives. Your total stays the same — you're just changing the plan.
Can I save toward a goal or pay off a debt?
Yes. On Home, the Goals card lets you set a savings goal, a planned expense (like car insurance due in June) or a debt to pay off. Give it a target amount and, if you like, a date, and SpendWise shows your progress and how much to set aside each month.
The free plan includes one savings or planned-expense goal and one debt goal at a time. Payoff strategies for several debts are part of Premium.
Does SpendWise add recurring bills automatically?
Not today. You record each transaction yourself. SpendWise does suggest a category based on payees you've used before.
Will SpendWise tell me how to invest or save?
No. SpendWise shows your own numbers clearly — what's available, what needs attention, where money went — and leaves the decisions to you. It isn't financial advice and doesn't promise savings.
Split expenses
Do the people I split with need an account?
Yes. You invite each person by their email address, and they join with their own free SpendWise account using that address. That way everyone sees the same balances.
How do invites work?
In the group's settings, enter the person's email address and choose Create invite link. Copy the link and send it however you like. It works once, only for that email address, and expires after 7 days. You can revoke a pending invite at any time.
How are expenses split?
Equally, by exact amounts, or by percentage. Shares are calculated to the cent (or to the whole yen or won), so they always add up to the total. Each member's balance is what they paid minus their share, and the balances in a group always add up to zero.
Does SpendWise send or collect money?
No. Pay each other however you normally do — bank transfer, cash or another app — then record the payment in SpendWise with Settle up. The person receiving it can confirm the payment.
How does a split expense affect my own budget?
When you pay, only your share counts as spending in the budget category you choose. The rest is tracked as money owed back to you, and being paid back isn't counted as new income.
What happens when I reach the free monthly limit?
You can't add a sixth new split expense that month, but you can still view everything, edit existing expenses and record settlements. The count resets at the start of each calendar month.
Privacy & your account
Where is my data stored?
With our database provider, Supabase, on servers in Oregon, USA. See the privacy policy for everything we collect and why.
Does SpendWise show ads or sell my data?
There are no ads, and the app doesn't include third-party advertising or analytics trackers. The privacy policy explains how your data is used.
Can I export my data?
Yes. You can download a full copy of your data as a JSON file from Settings at any time. A spreadsheet (CSV) export of transactions is part of Premium, which isn't available during the beta.
How do I delete my account?
In the app, go to Settings and choose Delete account. You can also start from the account deletion page. Deleting erases your account.
